6 Jan 2024

On January 6, 2024, a long-awaited and historic moment unfolded in the Diocese of Hong Kong. It marked the grand opening and consecration ceremony of the new annex of St. Joseph's Church in Fanling. Thanks be to God our Father, it is the result of the culmination of meticulous planning and dedicated efforts, all guided by His Divine Grace.

On that momentous day, an illustrious gathering of guests blessed the occasion. His Eminence Cardinal Stephen Chow, S.J., the Bishop of Hong Kong, led the Holy Mass, accompanied by the two Bishop Emeritus, Cardinal John Tong Hon and Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-Kiun, SDB. Most Rev. Joseph Ha Chi-Shing, OFM, Auxiliary Bishop of Hong Kong, and priests from various parishes, all participated in the concelebration, adding to the significance of the day.

The event was graced by the presence of former Chief Executives Mr. Donald Tsang and his wife, as well as Mrs. Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-Ngor. The invaluable contributions of the benefactors, who played a significant role in the completion of the new church annex were acknowledged and appreciated. The chairpersons from the different Parish Pastoral Councils, along with esteemed dignitaries such as the principals of Catholic schools in the North District, were among the distinguished guests in attendance.

The Opening Ceremony of the new annex took place at the plaza opposite the old church. Cardinal Stephen Chow initiated the ceremony by unveiling the stone plaque next to the cross, and later proceeded to the stage where he, along with parish representatives, completed the final seven puzzle pieces. This special puzzle was encouraged by Fr. Pietro Paolo Dossi, the Parish Priest of St. Joseph's Church, as a means for personal renewal. Through prayers, individuals wrote down their commitments to renew themselves and affixed them to the puzzle pieces, ultimately forming a beautiful picture. As parishioners participate in future thanksgiving masses, they will be reminded of their commitments to renew their faith in God. Lastly, a mesmerizing lion dance performance enhanced the atmosphere of the opening ceremony, prompting enthusiastic cheers and vibrant merry-making.

At 3 o’clock in the afternoon, Cardinal Chow presided over the Consecration Ceremony. The Ceremony commenced with representatives from the Building Committee, providing an overview of the new annex, highlighting its connection to the old church through the seven sorrows and joys of St. Joseph.

The church plaza has also been adorned with plants mentioned in Deuteronomy 8:8, symbolizing a new and blessed beginning for the Fanling church. The overall design is carefully crafted to foster a sense of connection between parishioners and pilgrims, inviting them to join St. Joseph and experience the wonders of God's redemption.

Subsequently, accompanied by the liturgical procession, Cardinal Stephen Chow proceeded to the entrance of the new church annex for the Door-opening Ceremony. The keys of the new annex were entrusted to Fr. Dossi and representatives from the Parish Pastoral Council. With a flourish, the doors swung open, igniting a wave of applause and enthusiastic cheers from the entire congregation, filling the air with resounding praise. Following the Door-opening Ceremony, the Holy Mass commenced. One of the notable rituals during the mass was the solemn placement of the sacred relics. Collected by the late Rev. Francesco Conte, PIME, over the course of many years, the box of relics was reverently sealed in a compartment beneath the altar.

The solemn ceremony had a profound impact on the parishioners in attendance, as they deeply felt the abundant grace of the Lord. The newly constructed church will serve as a sacred haven where parishioners can devoutly worship God, engage in the sacraments, and partake in the Holy Eucharist. It will also stand as a consecrated place through which the love and mercy of the Lord can be expressed and shared. This spiritual sanctuary provides us with a pathway to draw intimately closer to God, enabling us to attentively listen to His divine teachings, and it also fosters a profound and unifying bond of faith and love within our community.

The occasion also attracted the attendance of esteemed guests from both within and beyond the parish, symbolizing their witness to this momentous journey. Their presence not only demonstrated their fervent devotion to the Lord but also exemplified the unity and love shared among the diverse church communities. The grandeur of the day's ceremony left a profound impression, highlighting the strength of our community and fostering even deeper connections within our church family. May this sacred church continue to be the focal point of missionary endeavours, guiding more individuals to embrace the boundless compassion of the Lord. Through the mutual support of our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, let us construct an unwavering foundation for our faith.
