Development of Catholic Cemeteries

The Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong manages five cemeteries. While St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in Happy Valley is saturated, other cemeteries in Chai Wan, Cheung Sha Wan, Sai Kung and Cheung Chau still offer ossuary/urn niches in addition to exhumable burial lots (one extendable term only). Starting 1 September 2020, the Diocese introduced two trial schemes, namely family niches and exhumable burial lots (multiple extendable terms) at the Chai Wan Catholic Cemetery. The mortality rate in Hong Kong is expected to rise in the future as the population ages. Cremation has become a preferred option these days and this increases the demand for niches. The Diocese faces the same issue; certain cemeteries may finish allocating niches in the next few years. To address this need, the Diocese has to urgently expand and develop Catholic cemeteries for its continued supply.
