Appeal for Donation amid the Covid-19 Pandemic

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

May the Peace of Christ be with you!

It has been over a year since the Diocese convened the first meeting of the Diocesan Fund-Raising Commission for Church Building and Development in March 2019. With the support and contributions of all Members of the Commission, quite a number of fund-raising activities have been scheduled with a view to launching them at the start of 2020, engaging you all to establish a future together with the Diocese. Given the ravaging of the Covid-19 pandemic however, we have not been able to conduct the activities as originally scheduled.

Up to now, we have received only the second collection from the Sunday Mass on 8 December 2019, donations by the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and St Jerome’s Church (Tin Shui Wai) after the fund-raising walkathon in celebration of their 25th anniversary, plus contributions sent in by some faithful. On behalf of the Catholic Diocese and Members of the Commission, I wish to express my heartfelt thanks to all generous donors mentioned above.

The traumatic impact brought about by the pandemic on the whole world has triggered an unprecedented damage to the societies. This pandemic has resulted in many losing their loved ones, devastation of the valuable family system, breakdown in human communication, incalculable economic loss and far-reaching harm to the physical, mental and spiritual well-being of mankind, not only in Hong Kong, but also worldwide. Although the Catholic Diocese is also under the same impact, we remain steadfast to the caring for the community’s well-being and discharging our social responsibility. We are committed to dedicate our human resources to build a community of faith, hope and love.

Apart from issuing fund-raising leaflets, we also make good use of the webpage to communicate with you, in a more direct and convenient manner. You will also be in a position to easily stay on top of various crucial areas, among others, the vision of the Catholic Diocese in aspects undergoing development, funds raised, work progress at the construction sites, and fund-raising initiatives of the Diocese, to name but a few. Hence You can render your support according to your personal capability.

Let us pray earnestly to our almighty God, that the Covid-19 pandemic can soon be contained, that the life of Hong Kong citizens can return to normal, and together we build our ideal and sweet homes!

In Christ

How could a home be considered home,

I am just but an ordinary senior member of the church. I really like going back to the church every week, to attend the Mass and to worship the Lord. I am particularly thankful to the Lord that we all can meet and greet one another even during the pandemic!

At the parish, I often hear people say, "the parish is my home." I like this phrase very much. When something happens to the family, we as children should help; otherwise who would participate and support the things that parents have put together?

Lately, I was attracted by the concert Stella Maris - To our Blessed Mother Mary: an evening of songs initiated by some passionate church members. Once again, I reminded myself of this important notion: Only when we have the Diocese, we have the Parish; we have what we called “home”. As the Diocese needs funds for church building, I told myself that I will be a good support to this family. Though small, I hope we can consolidate our efforts, to gather the sand and build a tower.

So I started contacting church members, inviting them to join this family activity. Indeed, being able to take part, support and share the work is a gift from the Lord!

I wish the concert a great success!
Lord, we entrust ourselves in you!

God gives me this Home
Our Holy Mother cares and loves this Home
Sorrow and joy regardless, we guard our Home
Unity and harmony fill our Home
Brothers and sisters will all come Home

“The zeal of thy house hath eaten me up”

During the pandemic, we have been attending mass online and on one occasion, I accidentally landed on the webpage of the Diocesan Fund-raising Commission for Church Building and Development. That was in the season of Lent and we just read Chapter 2 of the Gospel of St John. Right there and then, this scripture popped up in my head, “The zeal of thy house hath eaten me up”. (John 2:17) It was indeed a timely reminder! This “house” is not only the body of Christ, but it is also our Church – a place we meet up, pray, thank and praise the Lord. How can I ignore the needs of the Diocese and not contribute to her building this “house”?

Jesus humbled himself and dwelt among us, and saved us with immense love unimaginable to all. By comparison, my meagre donation is really nothing.

Special thanks to the Diocese and the Fund-raising Commission for their dedicated efforts. May the Church continue to grow in leaps and bounds under the grace and guidance of the Lord, to offer more assistance to the needy and spread the Good News of Jesus!

Jesus gave a new meaning to death
We can do so as well!

I chose to support the Church through Policy Donation as I celebrate the 10th year anniversary of my baptism and as I joined the insurance industry this year.

As part of the celebration, I not only took part in the Vocation Campaign Challenge but I also made the Diocese one of the beneficiaries of my insurance policy. I feel obliged, as a Catholic and an insurance agent at the same time, to live out Faith, Hope and Love through my words and through my deeds, and I did it with much gratitude.

Very much like Christ has given death a new meaning so that death no longer becomes a curse, we can also transform death into a blessing and support for the Church through Policy Donation to let love stay. Such a gracious act, why not?

Our Parish put together in March the Love-filled Lent charity sale of masks programme in support of the Diocesan fund-raising initiatives for church building and development, adding another level of meaning to this year’s Lenten season, bringing joy and positive energy to our Parish at the same time.

An hour after the charity sale began, all the 160 boxes were gone! Due to the extremely good response, the Parish assisted faithful to pre-order. After two consecutive Sundays, a total of 640 boxes were subscribed, bringing the event to a successful close.

We thank the Lord for the passionate support of the parishioners. Under the pandemic, I believe every family has stocked up a certain number of masks at home but this obviously has not stopped us all from loving and supporting the Church.

Pray that everyone will make his/her share of contribution and that the Diocese will achieve their fund-raising target soon!

The Miracle of Five Loaves and Two Fish

The Miracle of Five Loaves and Two Fish

When I was invited by Rev. Benedict Lam to serve as a member of the Diocesan Fund-raising Commission for Church Building and Development in January 2019, I immediately said yes. I thanked the Lord for His grace and calling.

Indeed, to be able to serve the Church is a blessing. It’s a calling from the Lord. Since our time, health, wealth and everything we have are all gifts from the Lord, how can we turn a deaf ear to His calling?

In the past two years, the Commission has faced mammoth challenges. All the large-scale fundraising activities were shelved because of the social incidents and the pandemic respectively in 2019 and 2020. The originally-planned fundraising roadshow to parishes to recruit monthly donors was postponed due to the suspension of public masses. We could not help but feel frustrated as the amount of funds raised remained pretty much the same.

It was at this juncture that we received generous donations of facial masks and multi-coloured illuminous statues of Our Lady for charity sale. We felt like being given a shot of adrenaline at that moment. Due to the pandemic, Rev. Lam appealed to parishes for their support, and the Commission spread the news through social media. By word of mouth, we have been getting support from many faithful and entities, and received a large number of enquiries everyday particularly during the initial stage. We are thankful to the Lord.

Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we also changed the original plan of the Thy Kingdom Come Exhibition and Charity Bidding from physical to online bidding. Instead of sticking to old practices, the event has taught us to think outside the box to overcome difficulties and challenges, especially in times of adversity.

In the course of fundraising, we have also come to know many touching stories: elderly faithful coming with trolleys to buy masks to be given away to the needy. Apart from individuals actively participating in the bidding for art pieces, there were groups of faithful from different parishes voluntarily pooling their resources to bid for one. All these have contributed a significant amount to the funds we raised, though small in the grand scheme.

In these two events, we experienced again the miracle of five loaves and two fish – warm-hearted people donated to us face masks and illuminous statues of Our Lady; faithful actively participated in the charity sale, some for their own use and some for the needy. In the charity bidding for art pieces, participating religious and clerics contributed their masterpieces; some successful bidders brought home the art pieces they liked for their families and friends to appreciate, spreading the Good News at the same time while others gave away the art pieces they bid to homes for the aged or their churches for more to appreciate. There were also successful bidders who, after paying the sum, let the next highest bidder to take up the bid instead, with the hope of raising more for the Church. We also had bidders who, though unsuccessful in the bidding, donated what they had offered in the bidding, regardless.

We thank the Lord for performing the miracle of five loaves and two fish again in our fundraising events in the last two years. We truly believe that in the activities to come, this miracle will be further manifested in the generous support and active participation of our brothers and sisters.

Bidding calligraphies with life’s motto

Bidding calligraphies with life’s motto
As a constant reminder and company for the kids

2020 is an unforgettable year for all! While Hong Kong has encountered many unexpected challenges, my family members have also experienced changes in their work and study, and we all went through the year with a trembling and heavy heart. Despite all these, I am still very much at peace and I trust that God is protecting my family. At the least, we are still living healthily. I miss the church and would like to take my two children to Sunday school but, since we can’t, I say thanks to the Lord with my children at home.

Our family is facing a bit of financial pressure and the situation may worsen in the days to come. When planning how to use the money, I realized once again that everything I got comes from God. So I specifically set aside some for the church. I then searched online for means of donation and there, I learnt about the “Thy Kingdom Come” exhibition. I was amazed when I saw that the priests and sisters are actually masters of calligraphy!

There I saw two pieces of work by Fr. Nicolas De Francqueville. A French missionary, Fr. Nicholas has not only learnt to read and write the very complicated Chinese characters, but he is also well integrated into the Chinese culture, and he actually writes better than many of us. Chinese words, though succinct, always carry great truths. "Always be happy, Unceasing Prayer, Be Grateful in All” and “Universal Love” are good reminders especially in hard times. I was deeply touched when I looked at them, coz this is exactly what has given me strength every time I run into difficulties. I then discussed with my husband about bidding these great mottos for our two children, to accompany them as they grow up.

Bidding was pretty intense at the latter stage and the bidding price almost hit the ceiling of my budget. I prayed to God and hoped, with His grace, I would be successful in bidding. Even if I was not successful, I would still find ways to donate the sum. I was really excited and exhilarated when I was informed of the result. Yes, I was successful!

Because of the pandemic, I wasn’t able to come back and receive the art pieces from the hands of Fr Nicolas, thank him and talk to him in person. Taking the opportunity here, my family and I want to most sincerely thank him for the work. Although we haven’t really settled down with a permanent place of residence, I know that wherever I live, these two art pieces will be mounted in prominent locations in our home, to remind us all to trust in Him all the time and learn to love universally.

The Source of JOY

I very much concur with one of the messages in the Prayer for Parish Renewal where it says “We are grateful to you for calling us… to be living stones that build up the Church. Together with our parish, we take part in the evangelizing mission that Christ has entrusted to the Church.” Our capabilities should be deployed on serving people. St Teresa of Calcutta has also said “The fruit of Faith is Love; the fruit of Love is Service.”

It is in fact the responsibility of every child of God to give what he can to work with the Church to serve others and spread the Gospel and this, is also the Source of JOY. “You received this as a gift, so give it as a gift.” (Mark 10:8b)

Let’s consolidate our efforts to service others and evangelize!

Thy Kingdom Come
May God be with us always!

In the afternoon of 9 January, when I incidentally watched on the internet the Opening Prayer for the “Thy Kingdom Come” Online Exhibition, I was attracted by the title of this event. At the ceremony, the presiding priest and the host gave an introduction of the exhibition which further aroused my interest. I started to view each and every one of the exhibits, their descriptions and videos. From the videos sharing participating clerics and religious’ thoughts while they were practising calligraphy and painting, I could feel the peace and joy they experienced in the presence of God. Deeply moved by them and the meaning behind this fund-raising initiative, I decided to participate in the bidding.

I later received a call in the afternoon of 1 February, telling me that I was successful in the bidding and invited me to the presentation ceremony scheduled on 6 February. I was a little hesitant then as I wasn’t sure if my physical condition (currently undergoing treatment for cancer) would allow me to go. Thanks to the mercifulness of the Lord, I finally made it. Through my conversation with the priests and organizers, I could feel their love, faith and humility. I was impressed by the clergy and religious’ wholehearted dedication to the spreading of the Gospel, and equally by the untiring effort of the organizers servicing the Church. I then checked into myself. Although I have been a Catholic since I was little, I never took part in any of the activities and ministries of the Church other than going to Sunday masses, always using my heavy workload as an excuse.

It is indeed a blessing to be with God. In the course of my treatment for cancer, I have had to bear a great deal of physical pain. Yet I am grateful to our Father for granting me a new understanding of myself, ridding off the impurities of my life, getting a new insight into the meaning of life and drawing me closer to the Lord. Notwithstanding the physical pain I suffer, my heart teems with peace and joy. I will continue to learn from the clergy and religious the virtues of love and faith with a humble heart — to be with the Lord always.

With best wishes for a happy and healthy new year! May God bless us all!

Spirituality and Chinese art: The Immersed Moon and Harmony

We are so honored and humbled to support “Thy Kingdom Come” charity through bidding “The Immersed Moon” painting by Fr Joseph Tham.

The event is very meaningful by integrating charity with the mission of intercultural and interreligious dialogue advocated by Vatican Council II. Fr. Tham’s art work clearly demonstrates the spirit of Pope Francis’ Laudato Si and Saint Francis of Assisi, the saint who is close to our heart. Pope Francis reminds us that “Nature is nothing other than a certain kind of art, namely God’s art, impressed upon things, whereby those things are moved to a determinate end.”

Fr. Tham presents a holistic picture of God’ art in the sky (heaven), moon and water, which Saint Francis addresses as Brothers and Sisters, a natural and social fraternity of human love for their neighbour, nature and God.

In facing the consequences of pandemic due to environmental destruction by humanity, the painting brings out the ecological spirituality and conversion advocated by Pope Francis which also echoes the Chinese cultural wisdom of harmony and union between heaven and humanity. It is under heavenly sky, through moonlight immersed in purification of fresh air, water and natural habitat that this spirituality and conversion may be contemplated and realized.

The Joy of “Pain”

The Joy of “Pain”

Since I received the $10,000 distributed to citizens from the Government’s “Cash Payout Scheme” last year, I have been thinking of how best to use this money.

I have a stable job, hence my life has not been greatly impacted by the pandemic. One night, I searched online to check out the webpages of various institutions, hoping to find a suitable one to donate this $10,000. I accidentally came across the website of the Diocesan Fund-raising Commission for Church Building and Development, and learnt that the Diocese would need a lot of funding for various projects. I wished to contribute a little to God’s projects.

I am not well off, and had indeed taken some time to think about this “five-digit” donation. As I was struggling, I thought, “the fund-raising target is $500 million in three years! My $10,000 would be insignificant and would not help much; other people, richer than me, would be able to help...” Nevertheless, a thought came to my mind later. “Although $10,000 looks small in my eyes, God must have the ability to turn it into more. Just like how Jesus used five loaves and two fish to feed 5,000 people. Hence, I just need to contribute what I have, and let the Heavenly Father handle the rest.”

Saint Teresa of Calcutta, my favourite saint, once said, “This is the meaning of true love, to give until it hurts.” I like this quote very much; it reminds me to give out more and more to love. Frankly speaking, this “five-digit” donation did make me feel “painful”. Thanks to the Heavenly Father for letting me feel the immense joy brought about by this “pain” for Him.

This deed was done for the Lord and I originally thought of keeping it to myself. Thanks to the Commission for inviting me to share about my feelings… all for the glorification of our Lord. Let me also invite you all to contribute yourselves, share what you have, and experience this “joy of pain.”

Grateful to the Government for the land grant
Should capitalize this opportunity to build a new church

From auntie:

“Since the Lord is the master and the king of heaven and earth, every church on earth should therefore be regarded as His palace, His home. Every time I pass by a church, I will drop in to light a candle and make a little prayer if time allows. I am happy to pay a visit to the Lord’s home and say “hello” to Him. On leaving, I invariably feel exalted especially when it’s a church I visit for the first time. When I was little, I once heard my elder sister, a Catholic nun, said, “On your first visit to a church, you can ask God to grant you three wishes.” I don’t know whether it is true but I believe it anyway.

We are all inert by nature. We will find it more convenient going to mass if the church is in our neighborhood and the traveling time involved is short and manageable. People would also be attracted to go glorify and praise God if the church carries spectacular architectural features. Even the stray lambs will be drawn to return to the arms of God. ”

From dad and uncle:

“Although I am a lamb that has gone astray, in my heart I know that God exists. Whenever I pass by Yan Fook Centre (a Protestant Church) on Cheung Sha Wan Road, my heart is filled with admiration and envy. I can’t help but marvel at the huge financial resources they have in putting up such a magnificent building in the centre of the urban area dedicated wholly for worship and religious gatherings. Given the development in Hong Kong in recent years, it is not easy to obtain a land grant from the Government for building a new church. We should therefore capitalize on this great opportunity.”

From us two:

“We are lambs that have gone astray. However, since we were educated at catholic schools since small, we respect and are grateful to the Lord deep down our heart. We also think we should make good use of this great opportunity to build a new church.”

As an elderly, what can I do for you Lord?

I kept asking myself this question after my baptism: How can I repay God’s love? How can I share with others this grace I received? I am no longer young. I don’t have the vitality and physical strength to do anything “big” no matter how willing I am. For a while I was quite perturbed by it. It’s through my prayers to God that I finally came to realize it’s the heart that matters. If I can avail myself of every opportunity in daily life to love God and my neighbors, even the most trivial things will be pleasing to God.

When I first saw the Diocese’s fundraising leaflet, I was at once touched by it. I said to myself: this is another good opportunity for me to serve God. I may not be able to participate in other things, but by offering a small donation, I can join hands with others to “sow the seeds of hope” in support of the church’s development in Hong Kong!

I remember what a deacon once said to us while we were in catechism class: We have about 3000 new faithfuls every year but not one new church has been built for some years. Why? He asked us to reflect on it ourselves.

I sincerely hope that all brothers and sisters in Christ would keep the flame in their hearts ablaze after their initiation sacraments; go to church often to experience the joy of being together with God in mass and in praying alone. Together let’s spread God’s Love far and wide!

“These people were in poverty when they were young
Today they are returning love with love”

In October, I saw an online appeal for fundraising by the Diocese which reminded me of the HKCBPA Retreat conducted at St Andrew’s Church in Tseung Kwan O on May 13 last year. The spiritual director then, Rev Benedict Lam also mentioned that the Diocese would soon roll out a number of large-scale infrastructure projects.

Every year, during the Month of the Souls in Purgatory, St. Joseph’s Hospice (the Elderly Association with 50+ years’ history in our parish) would make donations (appropriated from the reserve fund) to commemorate departed members of the Association, and we normally offered them to sanctuaries such as the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Chai Wan and St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in Happy Valley.

Due to the epidemic and the social distancing measures this year, we have suspended all our activities in accordance with the directives of the Government and the Diocese. We only dispatched messages in our chat groups. After discussing with our members and with the endorsement of our spiritual director Fr. Peter Leung, we shared Rev. Benedict’s video appealing to support the Diocesan fundraising initiatives to 60+ members, and further passed along the message to others by word of mouth. “Don't cease to do good things no matter how seemingly insignificant they are.” All members agreed to donate half of the Elderly Association’s deposit in the bank.

I couldn’t even dream, that within a week, our elderly friends responded by making individual donations of over $10,000. On 29 October, I delivered to the Diocese a cashier’s check of $8,000 drawn from the Association’s account, along with personal donations from other members totaling $23,800. On my way home, I brought with me the donation receipts addressed to the various donors. I said to Jesus “Thank you! Thank you! Mary our Mother, thank you! Thank you! St. Joseph, thank you!” These people were in poverty when they were young. Today they are returning their love (from the Lord) with love, and with a grateful heart.

Let’s hope all those alive have a spiritual home to return to… churches opening from 7am to 10pm are good places to have quiet chats with the Lord. Isn’t it nice if there is a church close to home where you can be fed spiritually and meet with the Lord?

Whereas the expansion of cemetery facilities would allow the dead to have a home. This, also is an issue of concern to our elderly church members.

Our clergy work very hard for the church members; it is just natural for us to support with actions!

I chose to be a monthly donor
to make this offering part of my life

I rejoiced that they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of Yahweh’ (Ps 122:1)

Going to church for mass or praying everyday becomes part of my life for years. Even during the period that no public mass could be held at church, I still tried to go to church for praying. I can experience inner silence and God’s grace whenever I am in the church. This experience gives me support and strength to face challenges in daily life. It is known that quite a number of people join catechism class and then baptised after they have an encounter with church.

I visited Cheung Sha Wan St. Raphael’s Catholic Cemetery more frequently after the death of my beloved mother last year. Though the cemetery is located at urban area and close to a highway, we can still be in touch with nature and have peace there. It seems to be a good place for the deceased to rest in the peace of God.

To me, church is the visible sign of God and a solid base for evangelization and pastoral work while cemetery is a place for the deceased to rest in the peace of God. Therefore, I feel obliged to support the Fund-raising Project for Church Building and Development. I chose to be a monthly donor to make this offering part of my life and help provide sustainable support to the Project.

Having grown up in a school run by the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong and received various social services she has provided, I have witnessed the “benevolent” seeds sown by the Diocese for all walks of life in Hong Kong. Under a spiritual dimension of care, I, together with many others, have learnt about the truth, goodness and beauty in this life journey. Thanks must be given to the Diocese for guiding the community as it seeks the direction and meaning of life.

When I was a child, I donated my pocket money in the school during Lent and I learnt the joy of sharing. Through daily prayers in assemblies, I felt the peace from God. Through the Caritas charity bazaars, I testified the selflessness of the Diocese in caring for one another and appropriately using the donations.

I happened to know that the Diocese is raising funds for the building of new churches, expansion of the cemetery facilities and renovation of existing churches. Though not a Catholic, I hope that I can contribute to the Diocese and partake in the building of the community. I remember the Gospel once talks about Jesus seeing a poor widow donating two small coins, and said what she had put in was more than all others (Luke 21:3). I understand that it is God's pleasure to see every one of us contributing, no matter how big or small.

Let’s unite and donate with love to support the building of a better future for the Diocese and the community.

A sincere wish from a faithful

I come from a parish where the place for Sunday mass inside a community centre is set up in the morning and dismantled after the last mass is celebrated. How much have I longed for the establishment of a new church… but where will the money come from?

My dear brothers and sisters, in the last several tens of years, the Diocese has built a number of new churches, big and small, and engaged in major or minor repair works. All these require a lot of fund. As St Paul made the following appeal in his letter to the Corinthians:

Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each must do as already determined, without sadness or compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Moreover, God is able to make every grace abundant for you, so that in all things, always having all you need, you may have an abundance for every good work. As it is written:“He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.”

The one who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You are being enriched in every way for all generosity, which through us produces thanksgiving to God, for the administration of this public service is not only supplying the needs of the holy ones but is also overflowing in many acts of thanksgiving to God.

Through the evidence of this service, you are glorifying God for your obedient confession of the gospel of Christ and the generosity of your contribution to them and to all others, while in prayer on your behalf they long for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you. Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!

God bless us all!

Come, hold up this home together!

On a Sunday morning, I left the church after the mass in the usual manner. When I stepped out of the door, a pile of white envelopes caught my eyes. I was amazed and I started approaching the envelopes and picked up one. I opened it. It was a donation form… I was about to drop it back on the table but I didn’t.

It was a bit of a surprise that I carried the envelope home instead of throwing it into the garbage bin. I could not recall for how many days the envelope has been sitting on my desk, untouched, until one day I suddenly wanted to read the details.

When I realized it is for diocesan fund donation, my heart told me that it is a most valid support to our society. Church is not only God’s home, but a ‘home’ for all the Catholics and non-Catholics. It is a place where people find spiritual guidance and even material support. If we were to offer God’s blessings through this ‘home’ to more people, our ‘home’ must have adequate resources to sustain in a long run.

Whenever I read donation appeals on TV or newspaper, I usually have many doubts in my mind. With my personal experience from this ‘home’, I am most certain that regular donation to the church building and development of the Diocese is most beneficial to people. Though our church has not launched any large-scale fundraising promotion, our mighty God has offered me this great opportunity to donate to our ‘home’. I sincerely hope that you will soon be the chosen one to do the same.

God Bless!

Over the years, not only was the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong active in spreading the Gospel and building new churches, she has also serviced the community in education, social and other charity services.

To commemorate the Month of the Rosary, and in return for the grace the Lord has bestowed upon me in good times bad times, I offered my humble contribution to assist the Church in all these meaningful work, to sustain and continue its development and spread the beauty and goodness of the Lord, and to bring a better future for this home – Hong Kong – that we all love.

Then, one day, I suddenly realised that there is actually a total of around 620,000 Catholics in Hong Kong! I checked on the calculator and found that if only each of us donate $807, this “huge” target can be met!

Wait a minute! That’s not a mission impossible after all!! Of course, not everyone has the same ability to donate. I started my monthly donation anyway.

The question now is: are you willing to contribute a little bit for this big family?

To be able to share is a blessing

What I have done is trivial. I believe that there should be more I can do.

Everything that I have comes from God. All my possessions are free gifts from God.

It is a blessing to be able to share. I thank God for the ability to share.

Because of the epidemic, churches cannot open as normal. Masses have stopped for sometime. Church members cannot make donations during mass as normal. I am concerned whether the Church lacks the financial support it needs.Despite this, many of the work at the Church and the Diocesestill needs to continue. Salaries, expensesand bills still need to be paid, not to mention the major projects to which she has committed. I waswondering how I couldhelp the Church.

Be thankful and generous

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where rust and moth consume…” (Matthew 6:19).

We understand that it is our human nature to store our treasures on earth, especially keeping more assets for our next generation and for our retirement. It is a blessing for us to have these gifts from God but have we ever thought of sharing with others as taught by Jesus? We should be thankful of what we possess on earth and be generous to donate to the poor and to support the fund-raising activities of our Diocese for the development of our church buildings.

As members of the Church, we have the responsibilities to maintain our churches and to build more churches to cope with the increase in population and for our evangelization work.

Indeed, it is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35).

Spreading love with love
Learning from the poor widow in the Bible

For the first HK$50,000 raised in October in support of the Diocesan church building and development initiative, the Diocese will receive a match donation by Ave Maria Garden (“AMG”) , which will literally double the impact of the donations…. So I have learnt.

On 2 October, Rev. Benedict Lam attended the online “AMG Rosary Luncheon” and appealed to all participants. Jane, the host, told us a story about a friend in utmost distress and had no one to turn to. One day, she unwittingly stepped into a church and to her surprise, right there and there, she received the intangible comfort from the Lord. She later attended the catechism class and was baptized. I was deeply touched by the story and immediately thought, that if the AMG matching fund was increased, it would have a positive impact on the fundraising initiative. I instantly took actions, contacted Jane, and made a donation.

Indeed, my minimal donation isn’t worth mentioning. Jane then invited me on behalf of the Fund-raising Commission, to write down my thoughts and share with others in a bid to "spread love with love” and motivate more to contribute and support!

I have retired for more than 10 years. To a certain extent, I am also a poor widow. I am aware of my own constraints and would not do anything beyond my abilities. The poor widow in the Bible generously donated all the money she relied on for survival. What I did was to donate an amount that would not affect my living. It was kind of embarrassing to even mention it.

But I believe what God values is what drives our actions; it isn’t about how much we donate but the selfless love associated with the donation.

I further believe that God’s desire is also our desire.

I wish the Holy Spirit who touches my heart would touch yours too!

My wish: Everyone can go to the Church!

I attended the Sunday School when small. The teachers and priests then taught me to listen to the Gospel, do our part as Christians and help one another.

When I learnt that the Diocese is building churches, I had a simple thought…. Yes, I can help too. So I donated some money to partake in the construction. Hopefully it becomes a gravel of the church.

I am thrilled to have this opportunity to be involved in church building. When it’s done, kids will have the opportunity to attend Sunday School like me, to follow the footsteps of Jesus, learn how to be a good person, and live this life fully.

I pray that construction of the church goes smooth and, that everyone can go to the Church!

Thanks be to God! Praise to you Lord!

United, regardless of distance

United, regardless of distance

I am very happy to learn that the Diocesan Fund-raising Commission for Church Building and Development has launched a new web page on the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary on 15 August 2020. It provides us all, especially those outside of Hong Kong, with a platform to show our support for our diocese so that the funds received can be directed to building new churches and cemeteries as well as major repairs of historical churches.

It is a true fact that without money, there are limitations in carrying out the maintenance of our churches. I believe all projects of this Commission are equally important, such as the extension of St. Joseph’s Church in Fanling, building a new church in Tung Chung and expanding the cemetery in Cheung Sha Wan and/or Sai Kung, and other major maintenances. As many older buildings deteriorate with time, a lot of maintenance work has to be carried out regularly to ensure that they are kept in good condition.

I sincerely hope and pray that all parishioners of the Hong Kong Diocese, as well as anyone who has immigrated overseas but cares about the Hong Kong Diocese, will show their support for the Church in Hong Kong. Let us all try to give as much as our means allow.

May the fund-raising goal be achieved in the foreseeable future!

May God bless us all!

Sister Maria Ko Ha-fong’s latest book, titled “Words from Above” (translated; original name in Chinese《語點》), carries the following story:

During the COVID-19 epidemic, an infected 90-year-old man recovered and returned home after being hospitalized for a few days. When he got the bill from the hospital, he wept bitterly. Doctors and nurses all stepped forward to comfort him, "Dear, you are really lucky to be able to recover. The bill only covers the use of ventilator. If you have problems paying for it, we will see what we can do.” The old man replied, “No, I can afford it, and I am happy to pay. I was just moved when I realized that the air I breathed in these days costed 500 Euros. I am over 90 years old now, but I have never shown my gratitude for the free air I breathed in during all these years. I am deeply indebted to God!”

What a thought-provoking story! In this modern era, resources are abundant and living standards have been greatly improved. We take many things for granted. We do not treasure what we have, let alone feeling grateful. Just when we are enjoying a prosperous age, an invisible virus has turned the hustle and bustle of our cities into a stagnant and depressing state. Everyone stays at home and the whole world seems to have stopped. Nevertheless, this is a good opportunity for us to reflect: what have we done to the blessings from God?

During the epidemic, the number of flights among countries was significantly reduced, cities locked down, shops closed, people maintaining social distance. Even churches – our place for prayer – have to suspend all public service to avoid mass gatherings. Economic activities have almost come to a halt. Many shops are facing the risk of bankruptcy with some already gone out of business. What about our churches?

Everyone is facing a difficult time. Our donation, no matter how small it is, shows our gratitude for God’s blessing, and at the same time, support the operation and development of the diocese.

I have once heard a churchmate saying the following in a spiritual seminar, “Everything I have is lent to me by the Lord so that I can serve others."

On a Saturday afternoon in August, I went to the church to pray. After praying, I was attracted to a leaflet sitting next to the donation box. It was titled “Sowing the Seeds of Hope”, with a green leaf printed on it. I learned from the leaflet that the Diocese is raising funds for the repair and maintenance of old churches, and the construction of new ones. I reckoned that these projects are very costly, and would require a lot of teamwork and effort to achieve the targets.

I believe the Lord has spoken to me through others. Guided and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, I was able to follow my heart to help and contribute.

Thanks be to God! Praise the Lord!

What does donation mean to me?

When I first found out through our Tung Chung Parish late last year, that the Hong Kong Diocese has put together a Fundraising Commission for Church Building and Development, I was more than excited, especially for the plan to build the long-awaited church in our Tung Chung Community. I kept asking myself and other church goers, when shall we start the donation activities?

In early summer 2019, I felt blessed to be invited by our Parish Priest to attend with him meetings of the Fundraising Commission, taking notes and sharing it with members of the Parish Council afterwards.

Since the COVID-19 hard hit Hong Kong early this year, some of the planned fundraising activities had to be put on hold. Yet on August 15, a dedicated website has been launched: donate.catholic.org.hk, listing out various ways for Catholics and friends to donate and contribute to this good cause of development. I was elated and wondered what would be the best way to partake; thinking that continual donation, on a monthly basis, would be the best action for me. It serves as a good reminder for me to invite others to chip in to help as well.

Once I enrolled in the monthly donation scheme, I felt really happy and alighted. I will take every possible chance to engage others to take part. Big or small (amount), it doesn’t really matter!

May the Lord be with us always, and take this project to completion!

How I felt about donating...

“The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow. Be good anyway.”
extracted from Mother Teresa's Anyway Poem.

The above doctrine has always been kept at the bottom of my heart, and pushes me to continue servicing and responding to the needs of the Church and others.

The prevalent pandemic has thrown the world’s economy into recession. Many have lost their job which has made the Church’s fundraising efforts even more difficult. As a laity, we feel the impact of not being able to attend public masses but have truly appreciated the efforts of the Diocese in continuing her spiritual support to the faithful through online masses. All these require resources. If each one of us makes our share of contribution, needless to say, it will lighten the burden of the Church.

As taught by my parents when small: Don't cease to do good things no matter how seemingly insignificant they are.

“Water droplets eventually make an ocean; sand grains make the earth over time.” This jingle in the 70’s encouraging people to save up has a profound meaning easily understood by all. Every little makes a mickle! Anything will help the Church, for sure.

I fondly remember the Bible stories taught in Sunday school, as well as the warm bun and bottle of milk freely provided by the Catholic school I attended when small. Over half a decade has passed and I hope it is not too late to say “thank you” to the Church for what she has done for me. My donation doesn’t worth mentioning but if every faithful responds to this call for action, I am sure very soon, the Church will cumulate enough funds to continue her work in Hong Kong.

“When I was abandoned, you visited me…”
Jesus has not forgotten each and every helpless person, and for them the Church provides a deliverance shelter. Without funding, it will however be difficult to continue and expand her work. So, let’s all chip in to support our Mother Church.

Happiness lies in rendering help to others. Why not?

A new insight into this Scripture during the pandemic: “You received this as a gift, so give it as a gift”

Mid-February, the financial markets around the world went south because of the pandemic. Within a week, hundreds of billion dollars got evaporated from the stock market which, at the same time, took away part of my hard-earned assets.

Strangely enough, I wasn’t too upset then. Instead, I was kind of angry at myself that I wasn’t generous enough to use these funds (that otherwise disappeared in seconds) to support entities and people in need. There, with prayer and meditation, I reflected much on this Scripture, “You received this as a gift, so give it as a gift” (Mark 10:8), took on a new perspective on donation and realized again that everything is His. All I want to pursue now, is to seek the things in heaven, trusting that He will take care of the rest, very much like what the Collect in today’s mass prayed for, “bestow in abundance your mercy upon us and grant that, with you as our ruler and guide, we may use the good things that pass in such a way as to hold fast even now to those that ever endure”.

Through the gifts that the Lord has granted me, I have become one of his finance managers; and now, being asked to share what He has given me, freely.

What can I do for You?

Over the years during my service at various parishes, I have been graced to witness the ordination of several young deacons ...

Daniel

What can I do for You?

Over the years during my service at various parishes, I have been graced to witness the ordination of several young deacons – Rev Jacob Kwok and Rev Paul Kam respectively on 27 April 1996 and 2 May 1998 when I serviced at St Benedict’s Church. Twenty plus years later, Rev Timothy Yan was ordained on 4 January 2020. Although I wasn’t able to physically attend the mass, I was particularly moved as he was the first home-grown priest from St Jerome’s Church. God has truly been gracious. On 4 July the same year, Rev Anthony Pun was ordained.

To have the opportunity to take part in ordination masses is indeed a blessing. I am often amazed by the generosity of parents who offer their son to the Church, very much like Abraham totally entrusting to the Lord and offering his son Isaac to Him as a sacrifice. I sometimes ask myself: what if my sons and daughters, or grandchildren tell me one day they want to live a consecrated life? How will I respond? Yet, on further thought, have I ever prayed for their vocation?

I very much shared the thoughts of a catechist from my Parish:

“Come to me, all you that labour, and are burdened, and I will refresh you. Take up my yoke upon you, and learn of me, because I am meek, and humble of heart: and you shall find rest to your souls. For my yoke is sweet and my burden light.” (Mark 11:28-30)

The homily of the first mass celebrated by the newly-ordained Rev Anthony Pun was not delivered by him but by Rev Joseph Ng, Superior of the congregation to which he belongs. Rev Joseph said “yoke” often weighs people down, but the yoke given by Jesus, who is meek and humble, is light and gentle.

“Putting on the chasuble, (I) will never forget that from this point onward, (I) will have to suffer and sacrifice…”
On this delightful occasion, why should we be talking about suffer and sacrifice? Is that love too deep? Or is it love for love, making sacrifices out of love? With the chasuble, priests put on Christ as they take up His role on earth. In the same way, we have also put on Christ through marriage and baptism in Christ. We then become alive and empowered. At the same time, we also share His mission.

Indulged in the joy of the newly-ordained and as I listened to his sharing, tears welled up in my eyes and I had to gently wiped them with my handkerchief. God is amazing! He uses different means to call each and everyone of us to collaborate with Him. Have we heard Him calling, “Samuel, Samuel…” and have we responded “Here Am I” ?

As a lay person, how do we answer His call? Servicing at the Parish is one of the many proactive responses for sure and, I am certain that as long as one raises his/her hand, God will take care of the rest.

I just received today the cash paid out by the Government. If this $10K is to you icing on the cake, if you are thinking how to best utilize this sum, if you have some left after spending on your favourite items, if…… then you can consider donating a portion to support the Diocese (according to the affordability of you and your family) to expand the Church which is the body of Christ, and to support the development of Catholic cemeteries. This, I believe, is also one of the ways to actively respond to the call of Lord.

Faith takes up a very essential part of my life. Giving back to the Church is to me every faithful’s responsibility because it helps to ensure that there are sufficient funds to support our parishes and the Diocese’s initiatives to serve the needs of the faithful, to evangelize and spread the Good News, and to support the needy.

Taking the opportunity of the cash payout scheme by the Government starting June, I would use part of it to support the Church and encourage my friends and relatives to do the same according to their own financial capabilities.
